🌟 Welcome Korea – Your Local Food Guide App

What was the previous version like?

The earlier version of Welcome Jeju was a simple Android app focused on gathering food and place recommendations around Jeju Island. It collected daily-updated "hot place" information by scraping popular blog and web posts tagged as “맛집” (good restaurants).

Now, the app has evolved with a broader purpose.

Why was a renewal needed?

When visiting Korea, Google Maps often lacks detailed local information, especially in areas like Myeong-dong. Although apps like Naver Maps and Kakao Maps are optimized for Korean speakers, they tend to be inconvenient for foreign tourists.

While working on a project near Myeong-dong, I noticed many foreign tourists standing still, glued to their phones, trying to figure out where they were or where to go. With my limited English, I couldn't help much — so I decided to upgrade the app to better serve foreign travelers.

I also incorporated insights I gained by asking various AI tools to improve the app experience.

What’s new in the updated version?

The new version begins with a welcome screen and now supports the following languages:

• Korean
• English
• Chinese (Simplified & Traditional)
• Filipino
• Vietnamese
• Thai

I focused on languages commonly used by visitors from Southeast Asia, as they make up a large portion of Korea's tourists.

🧭 Key Features

1. Multi-language Support

The interface language can be selected at the start and changed later through the menu.

2. Main Screen – Explore Nearby

You can search for restaurants or places based on:

• Keywords (within a 5km radius)
• Categories
• Daily updated hot places curated from Korean bloggers.

3. Voice Search

You can use voice to search using keywords only. Speak in your native language — the app will:

• Convert your input into Korean,
• Search in Korean,
• Translate results back into your language.

🔐 Note: Voice recognition permission is required to use this feature.

4. Search Result Icons

• 📍 Location Marker: Based on your search keywords
• 🚩 Flag Marker: Highlighted “Hot Places” collected daily
